The Indian under 19 team tied the finals of the 2012 Asia Cup with arch rivals Pakistan U19 to share the cup among the two nations. In a match that was the second ‘last ball finish’ between the two countries in this very tournament, Pakistan once again showed nerves of steel to deny India a single off last ball and tie it for Pakistan. Pakistan had earlier scored 282/9 in their alloted 50 overs powered by Sami Aslam’s 124 ball 134, here at Kinrara Oval Academy, Kuala Lumpur.
Unmukt Chand continued his wonderful tournament as he followed up his semi-final ton against Sri Lanka with another ton in the finals. Chand lead India from the front as he acored 370 runs in 5 Asia Cup matches averaging an incredible 74.00 with 2 tons.
Earlier, India U19 won the toss and decided to field first on a very good batting track. Although wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals, Sami Aslam held one end firm and paired up with Umar Waheed (48) to build a 100 run stand for third wicket. None other Pakistan batsmen made a huge contribution. It was a one man show by Sami Aslam as he blasted 13 fours and 3 sixes. Rush Kalaria was the star bowler for India as he picked up a 5 for 37 in 10 overs.
India didn’t start too well as Vohra went early with India 20 for 1. One down Baba Aparajith teamed up with captain Unmukt Chand as both revived India and put India on course for the chase. Both added a mammoth 175 run stand for the 2nd wicket. Mohammad Nawaz finally got the breakthrough for Pakistan as Aparajith’s aggressive 86 ball 90 came to an end. Unmukt Chand carried the chase on from there with cameos by Zol (11) and Nath (23).
With just 36 needed off last 5 overs with 6 wickets in hand, India were firm favorites. But the match was far from over, as Pakistan bowlers showed great discipline to escape with a tie. Ehsan Adil was the hero for Pakistan as he defended mere 7 runs in last over. Earlier in the tournament, Pakistan had defeated India by 1 run in yet another last ball finish.
