In today’s day and age, when matters of governance and politics in India are facing such a multitude of questions, it is vital that we the youth take a stance to an extent regarding matters of national importance. ICT, Mumbai has come up with a way of providing us with hands on parliament experience with this unique event. Bharat Nadkarni finds out more about the event…
The ‘MODEL INDIAN PARLIAMENT’ will be a simulation of the Indian Parliament with participants representing various political parties from the ruling coalition and the opposition debating key issues concerning the nation and the challenges that it faces. It is an opportunity for all of you out there, who wish to see India change, to interact with other likeminded youth, and set the stage for a future Indian government-As you see it! Come experience what it is like to debate in the parliament house. Come and prove your point!
DATE OF THE EVENT- The event will be organized on the 22nd of January, 2012.
FORMAT OF THE EVENT-
The session will start with the Question Hour. Members can ask questions to the Ministers seeking information on matters of public importance. After the Question Hour the Minister concerned will move a bill which would be given to the members for their consideration prior to the event. The minister will make a short speech on the bill which would be followed by a discussion on the bill by members from both sides. Following the discussion the minister gives a closing speech and then the bill is put to vote. There will be four bills in the list of business. One bill will be introduced by the Leader of Opposition. Members can also discuss matters of urgent public importance under the guidelines given in the attached document. SELECTION CRITERIA –
Eligibility to the actual session would be on the basis of a short essay on the following issues:
- Right to Education
- National Food Security
- Lokpal
- National Sports Development
- FDI in Multi-brand retail
The essay should deal with all of the above issues and should clearly indicate your stand. The essay should not exceed 500 words. It should be as factual as possible and should essentially highlight the core ideas. Try to avoid abstract notions and make your essays crisp.

SESSION RULES-
The members can speak in English, Hindi and Marathi. The Parliament will comprise the treasury bench and the opposition. The treasury bench will have the Prime Minister and other Cabinet Ministers holding key portfolios. The opposition will be led by the Leader of Opposition.
The various posts would be decided after the short listing of participants. The agenda for the session and the list of business would be provided to the members prior to the event.
The bills to be moved by the concerned ministers would also be provided to the members prior to the event. The members are expected to be prepared with the provisions of the bill and also suggest amendments.
