VIT Student Handbook- Beating the stereotype

A group of second year students at Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Vellore have created an informative online platform for their fellow VITians, particularly the freshmen, to ease their transition into college life at VIT.

Christened the VIT Student Handbook, this unique initiative gives students hands-on information on important aspects of VIT such as hostel life, academic structure and recreational facilities both inside and outside campus.

The first week of the website launch was followed by an explosive response from the students at VIT; as this handbook provided them with vital information at one go. Months of work has been put in to ensure the website and the content within is as student friendly as possible.

The most loved feature of the handbook is a one-of-a-kind, student designed map that not only presents the vast campus in detail but also provides commute time between important junctions throughout the campus. The creators have made use of social media to actively interact with their audience and deliver on their suggestions and comments.

A specially created mobile website added to the appeal and accessibility of the information amongst the students. The website recorded over 2000 hits in its first week and the creators hope to benefit even more students by releasing subsequent versions with added content. Freshers have shown immense gratitude to their seniors for this considerate gesture. They feel this handbook is a positive contradiction to the largely misconceived, yet stereotyped notion of senior-junior interaction.  Seldom is such considerate thinking for the benefit of their juniors seen in college seniors. A practical example of how students of the 21st century have risen beyond their daily responsibilities to benefit their peers.
